Jump Rope: Ultimate Workout for Busy People?

Originally on Put It Somewhere.com

Inspired by a call from an A&R representative from Capitol Records (Hollywood) a while ago, I began looking into workouts I could do on the road. After a little research, I found that next to swimming, jump rope was the best form of exercise one could do. Very little impact (far less than running), comprehensive (works out nearly everything), and simple, jump rope was the answer for which I was looking.

Here are some of the benefits of jump rope:

  • Extremely effective – you can burn up to 1000 calories per hour (so I’ve read).
  • Portable – jump ropes fold up small enough to easily fit in any suitcase.
  • Little equipment required – all you need is a jump rope and a decent pair of sneakers.
  • Location independent – jump rope can be done anywhere there’s a few feet of space.
  • Meditative – once you achieve a steady rhythm, you can easily lose yourself in the flow.

The meditative qualities of jump rope I discovered by accident. I began counting my swings to keep track of my progress and eventually found myself counting without realizing. My counting became hypnotic and I would lose myself for minutes on end (I once lost myself for an hour and a half).

For the next several years I was nearly obsessed with jumping rope and I was without a doubt lean, fit, and energetic (though it didn’t help me get the record deal). I jumped rope for nearly an hour every day and I loved every minute. Recently I’ve begun jumping rope again and am almost back to an hour.

I know that jump rope is a great workout, but don’t take my word for it. Please visit these websites:
